Knowing your instrument

Most violinists play for years without knowing what a bass bar is or why the soundpost matters.

That works until something goes wrong. A buzzing note, a peg that will not hold, a bow that has stopped bouncing, a first position that feels stiff. Each is a specific mechanical problem with a specific fix, and a player who cannot name the parts cannot describe the symptom.

The bow

**Frog** is the block at the lower end where the hand grips. Heaviest part of the bow and hardest to control, which is why colle is practised there.

**Tip** is the far end. Lightest, most fragile, and where the arm must supply the weight the bow no longer provides.

**Stick** is the shaft, and it determines how the bow behaves more than any other component.

**Camber** is the curve built into the stick. It makes bouncing strokes possible, and it is lost by storing a bow tightened.

**Bow hair** is horsehair that grips the string through rosin. It wears out and needs replacing once or twice a year for most students.

**Screw** adjusts hair tension. Loosening after every session matters more than any other piece of bow care.

**Rosin** makes the hair grip. Light versus dark, how much, and why climate matters in North Georgia summers.

The neck and fingerboard

**Scroll** is the carved spiral at the top. Acoustically irrelevant and the clearest signature of a maker's hand.

**Pegbox** holds the tuning pegs and string ends. Prone to cracks, and worth knowing what to watch for.

**Pegs** hold the strings by friction alone. Why they slip in winter, stick in summer, and what to do about both.

**Nut** is the small ebony ridge at the top of the fingerboard. It sets string height and spacing, and one cut too high makes first position feel stiff for reasons no amount of practice fixes.

**Neck** carries the fingerboard and sets the string angle. Its angle drops over decades and eventually needs resetting.

**Fingerboard** is where the left hand presses. Why it has no frets, why it is curved, and why it wears grooves.

The body

**Body** is the resonating chamber where the sound is actually made.

**Top** is the spruce front plate, roughly 2.5mm thick, holding up around 9kg of downward pressure continuously.

**Back** is the maple rear plate. Where flame comes from, and why it is aesthetic rather than acoustic.

**Bouts** are the curved sections of the outline. The waist exists so the bow can reach the outer strings.

**F-holes** let air move and mark where the bridge belongs.

Internal structure

**Soundpost** is a small spruce cylinder wedged between top and back. Moving it a millimetre changes the sound, which is why the French call it the soul.

**Bass bar** is glued inside under the bass foot of the bridge. Its asymmetry with the soundpost is what makes a violin sound like a violin rather than a plain box.

**Linings and blocks** are the internal structure that lets thin wood survive 25kg of string tension.

Fittings

**Bridge** transmits string vibration into the top. Held by nothing but string pressure, and it warps if nobody checks it.

**Tailpiece** anchors the strings at the lower end.

**Fine tuners** adjust pitch in small increments, and why the E string almost always has one.

**Endpin button** takes the entire string load at the bottom of the instrument.

**Chinrest and shoulder rest** are the support system that frees the left hand. Poor fit here causes problems that look like technique problems.

**Label** is the paper slip inside, and why it almost certainly does not say what you think it does.

When it is the instrument and not you

The most useful thing on this page.

A student whose spiccato will not develop may have a bow with no camber. One whose first position feels stiff may have a nut cut too high. One whose tuning jumps and pings has a binding nut groove, not faulty pegs.

Recognising a setup problem saves months of practising at something practice cannot fix.

Common questions

Why does my violin buzz?

Work through these in order: a loose chinrest clamp, a fine tuner screwed down until it touches the top, an open seam where top meets ribs, a nut groove worn too deep, a string end rattling in the pegbox, or the tailpiece contacting the saddle. Most buzzes are one of these six and none need a luthier. If a note buzzes only in one place on one string, suspect a fingerboard groove.

Why will my pegs not hold?

Usually a poor fit between peg and hole, or humidity. Dry winter air shrinks the wood and pegs slip; humid summer air swells it and they stick. Peg compound solves most of it. If a peg pushes in more than halfway before it holds, the hole is worn and needs bushing, which is routine and inexpensive. Never force a stuck peg; that is how pegbox walls crack.

How often should I get my bow rehaired?

For a student playing an hour a day, once or twice a year. The signs are the bow slipping despite fresh rosin, the sound thinning, or hairs broken unevenly so the ribbon is thicker on one side. Never touch the hair with your fingers, because skin oil contaminates it permanently in that spot.

Does the flame on the back affect the sound?

No. Flame is a natural growth characteristic in the maple and is entirely aesthetic. Some excellent instruments have plain backs. Because figured maple costs more, a workshop working to a price spends money on it that could have gone into better spruce or better setup. For a student instrument, a plain back with good setup is the better purchase.

Is the label inside my violin real?

Almost certainly not, and that is not a scandal. Workshops made instruments in the style of famous makers and labelled them accordingly, often honestly at the time. Experts barely look at labels; they look at the scroll, the f-holes, the arching and the varnish. Your instrument may still be perfectly good to play, which is a separate question from what it is worth as an antique.
