The slight curve or bend of the bow stick. Affects the natural bounce of the bow and the weight distribution along it.

What it is

Camber is the curve built into a bow stick, bending inward toward the hair. More of this kind of thing is in the anatomy section.

Look along a bow from the tip with the hair loose and the stick curves down toward the hair, sometimes touching it near the middle. Tightening the hair straightens the curve, and the stick's resistance to being straightened is what gives the bow its springiness.

Camber is not a defect or a warp. It is deliberately set by the maker using heat, and it is one of the defining characteristics of a bow.

Why it exists

Modern bows have inward camber. Baroque bows curve the other way, outward, away from the hair.

The change came with the modern bow design established around 1800, and it fundamentally altered what a bow can do.

Inward camber puts the stick under compression when the hair is tightened. That stored energy makes the bow springy: it resists being pushed into the string and pushes back.

This is what makes bouncing strokes possible. Spiccato, sautille and ricochet all depend on the stick storing and returning energy. A bow with no camber does not bounce, and those strokes cannot be produced on it.

The outward-curving Baroque bow produces a different sound and different articulation, which is why period performance uses period bows rather than modern ones.

What it affects

Bounce. The primary effect. More camber generally means more readily available bounce.

Firmness at pressure. A well-cambered stick resists collapse when the player presses. A flattened one bottoms out, the stick touches the hair, and the sound chokes.

The sound at the tip. Camber affects how the bow behaves when extended, and a bow with lost camber often feels weak in the upper half.

Response. How quickly the bow speaks at the start of a stroke.

How much is right

There is no single correct amount. Makers vary it deliberately and players prefer different characteristics.

More camber gives more bounce and more spring, which suits players who use a lot of off-string technique.

Less camber gives a firmer, more direct feel, which suits sustained playing.

Too much makes the bow feel unstable and difficult to control at pressure. Too little makes it feel dead.

What matters practically is that the camber is even along the stick and appropriate to how you play.

How it is lost

Storing the bow tightened. The single most common cause. Hair under tension pulls against the camber continuously, and over months and years the stick gives.

This is why every teacher tells students to loosen the bow after playing, and it is the most consequential piece of bow care advice there is.

Over-tightening. Applies more force than the stick was designed to resist.

Heat. A bow left in a hot car can lose camber quickly.

Age. Even well cared for, sticks relax slightly over decades.

Recognising lost camber

With the hair loose, sight along the stick. It should curve toward the hair in a smooth, even arc.

A stick that looks nearly straight when loose has lost camber. A stick that is straight or curves away has lost it entirely.

The playing symptoms: the bow does not bounce, spiccato is difficult or impossible, the stick contacts the hair under moderate pressure, and the sound chokes when the player presses.

Students who cannot develop spiccato should have their bow checked before more practice is prescribed. A bow with no camber makes the technique physically unavailable.

Recambering

A bow maker can restore camber using heat, bending the stick and setting the new curve.

It is a real repair requiring skill, and it is not always fully successful. A stick that has been straightened over many years may not hold a restored curve.

Cost varies but is usually modest relative to the value of a decent bow. On a very cheap bow, replacement is often more sensible.

Carbon fibre bows do not lose camber, which is one of their practical advantages.

Where it comes up in playing

Invisibly, in every bouncing stroke.

A player who moves between bows notices immediately that the same spiccato technique produces different results, and camber is a large part of why.

How it is taught

Mostly as care instruction: loosen the bow, do not over-tighten, do not leave it in a car.

Beyond that, as diagnosis. When a student's off-string technique refuses to develop despite correct practice, checking the bow is the first thing to do, and camber is what to look at.

Checking your own bow

This takes ten seconds and is worth doing.

Loosen the hair fully. Hold the bow at eye level and sight along the stick from the frog toward the tip.

The stick should curve smoothly toward the hair, with the deepest part of the curve somewhere near the middle. The curve should be even, not kinked, and should not deviate sideways.

If the stick looks straight when the hair is loose, camber has been lost. If it curves away from the hair, it is gone entirely.

Also check for sideways bend. Sight along the stick and the hair should run centred beneath it. A stick warped to one side pulls the bow off line and is a separate repair.

Students who have never looked at their bow this way are often surprised by what they find, and a bow that will not bounce usually explains itself in that one look.
