The hollow box below the scroll that houses the four tuning pegs. The strings wind here, and a peg that slips or sticks is usually a pegbox fitting issue.

What it is

The pegbox is the hollow chamber between the nut and the scroll, carved from the same piece of wood as the neck and scroll. The anatomy section collects the related terms.

It holds the four tuning pegs, which pass through its side walls, and it contains the wound-up ends of the strings. A chromatic tuner makes this easier to work on alone.

How it is built

The neck, pegbox and scroll are carved from a single block of maple. There is no joint between them, which matters structurally because the pegbox is under considerable and constant load.

The chamber is hollowed from above, leaving two side walls of a few millimetres. Those walls carry the load from four pegs, each holding a string under 15 to 20 kilograms of tension.

Eight holes are bored through the walls, two per peg, and each hole is reamed to a precise taper matching its peg.

The relative thinness of the walls, combined with eight holes and constant tension, is why the pegbox is one of the more failure-prone parts of a violin.

How the strings sit

Each string passes from the nut into the pegbox, through a small hole in its peg, and is wound around the peg shaft.

The winding should be neat, moving toward the pegbox wall so that the string is drawn slightly against the wall, which helps the peg hold.

Windings should not overlap the peg hole or pile up untidily, and they should not press hard against the wall, which can crack it over time.

Strings that cross each other inside the pegbox can buzz and can make tuning unpredictable.

The G and D pegs sit on one side, the A and E on the other, arranged so the strings run cleanly to the nut without touching each other.

Cracks

The most common pegbox failure, and the one worth knowing about.

Cracks run from a peg hole toward the front or back of the pegbox, along the grain.

Causes:

Peg pressure. Pushing a peg in too hard, particularly a badly fitted one, wedges the walls apart.

Over-tight pegs. A peg that has swollen in humidity and is forced can split the wall.

String winding pressure. Windings pressed hard against the wall.

Age and dryness. Wood shrinks; the peg does not.

Impact. A fall.

A pegbox crack is repairable and common, but it needs attention. Left alone, it grows, and a badly cracked pegbox may need bushing, where the holes are plugged and redrilled.

Bushing

When peg holes have become oversized, worn oval, or cracked, a luthier fills them with wooden plugs and drills fresh holes.

This is a routine repair on older instruments and does not damage value if done well. Many hundred-year-old violins have been bushed once or twice.

Signs that bushing is needed: pegs that push in very far before holding, holes that look oval rather than round, or a peg that will not hold no matter how it is fitted.

What to watch for

Pegs pushed too far in. If a peg is nearly touching the opposite wall, the hole is worn and the fit needs attention.

Uneven peg protrusion. Pegs should sit at a comfortable and consistent depth.

Visible cracks. Any line running from a peg hole.

String windings touching the wall hard, or overlapping the peg hole.

Buzzing while playing that changes when you touch the pegbox. Often a loose winding or a string end vibrating inside.

Care

Little is needed beyond attention.

Keep humidity stable. Most pegbox problems trace to wood movement.

Wind strings neatly and do not force pegs.

If a peg is stiff, do not push harder. Peg paste or compound solves most sticking, and a properly fitted peg should turn with moderate effort.

If a peg slips repeatedly despite paste, the fit is wrong and a luthier should see it. Continuing to force it is how walls crack.

Where it comes up in playing

Only in tuning, which is where every interaction with the pegbox happens.

A well-fitted pegbox makes tuning quick and predictable. A worn one makes it a frustration, with pegs that stick, slip, or jump past the note.

Students who find tuning difficult often have an equipment problem rather than a technique problem, and the pegbox is usually where it lives.

How it is taught

As part of naming the parts, and then as part of learning to tune.

The practical lessons: push gently while turning, wind neatly, never force a stuck peg, and tell a teacher when a peg stops holding rather than fighting it for weeks.

Why tuning gets easier or harder with the seasons

Almost every seasonal tuning complaint traces back to the pegbox.

In dry winter air, the maple shrinks. The peg holes get slightly larger relative to the pegs, and pegs start slipping.

In humid summer air, the wood swells. Holes tighten and pegs stick.

The instrument is not broken. It is doing what wood does, and it will reverse when the weather does.

The practical responses: keep humidity as stable as you can, use peg compound, and do not force anything in either direction. A humidifier in the case during a dry winter solves more tuning problems than any adjustment to technique.

When to see a luthier

If a peg pushes in more than about halfway before it holds, the hole is worn.

If a peg will not hold despite fresh compound and correct technique, the fit is wrong.

If there is any visible line running from a peg hole, stop and get it looked at before it grows.

None of these are expensive repairs. All of them get more expensive if ignored.
