The small raised piece of ebony at the top of the fingerboard where the strings pass before entering the pegbox. Sets the string height and spacing at the top of the instrument.

What it is

The nut is the small ridge of ebony at the top of the fingerboard, where the neck meets the pegbox. The anatomy section covers the rest of this group.

Strings pass over it on their way from the pegs to the bridge. Four shallow grooves hold each string in position.

It is perhaps two centimetres long and a few millimetres high, and it has more effect on how an instrument plays than its size suggests.

What it does

Sets string height at the nut end. The depth of each groove determines how far each string sits above the fingerboard. This is half of the action, the other half being set at the bridge.

Sets string spacing. The lateral position of the grooves determines how far apart the strings sit, which affects everything from double stops to string crossings.

Defines the speaking length. The vibrating portion of an open string runs from the nut to the bridge. The nut is one of its two endpoints. The chromatic tuner on this site is worth having open while you practise this.

Provides a clean break angle. The string must leave the nut at an angle sharp enough to seat firmly, or it buzzes.

Why groove depth matters

Too high and the strings are hard to press near the nut. First position feels stiff, the student presses harder than necessary, and intonation suffers because pressing a high string down also stretches it sharp.

Too low and the string buzzes against the fingerboard when played open, or when played in low positions.

The correct depth is a small range, and it differs per string because the strings differ in thickness and vibrate with different amplitudes.

Many student instruments arrive with the nut cut too high, because leaving material is safer for the maker than removing it. A luthier lowering the nut grooves on a stiff-feeling student violin often transforms how it plays, for a modest cost.

Why spacing matters

Strings too close together make double stops cramped and cause accidental contact with adjacent strings.

Too far apart makes string crossings wider and the hand frame more stretched.

Standard spacing has settled through long practice, but small variations exist and some players prefer slightly wider or narrower.

Spacing at the nut also interacts with spacing at the bridge, since the strings converge or diverge along their length depending on the two.

What it is made of

Ebony is standard, matching the fingerboard. Hard, dense, and resistant to the wear the strings cause.

Older instruments sometimes use bone or ivory. Ivory is now restricted.

Some modern instruments use synthetic materials, which are consistent and durable.

What can go wrong

Grooves worn too deep. Over years, strings cut into the nut. The string sits lower, and eventually buzzes. Repairable by filling and recutting, or by replacing the nut.

Grooves too tight. A groove narrower than the string pinches it, so the string sticks rather than sliding when tuned. The result is a peg that turns but a pitch that jumps in steps rather than moving smoothly, and sometimes a ping as the string releases.

This is a common and easily fixed problem that students often mistake for a peg fault.

Grooves too wide. The string rattles laterally.

Nut coming loose. It is glued in place and can separate, particularly if the instrument has dried out.

Sharp edges. A badly finished groove can cut into a string and shorten its life, particularly on the thinner E string.

The tuning ping

Worth naming because it confuses so many students.

When tuning, if the pitch jumps suddenly with an audible ping rather than rising smoothly, the string is binding in the nut groove.

The string is stretching between the peg and the nut without sliding through, then releasing all at once.

The remedy is lubrication in the groove, usually with a soft pencil, which deposits graphite. A luthier may also widen or smooth the groove.

Students often believe their pegs are faulty when the nut is the actual cause.

Where it comes up in playing

Every open string. Every note in first position, where string height at the nut end has the most effect.

Also in tuning, where a binding groove makes fine adjustment impossible.

How it is taught

Rarely as a topic. It comes up as diagnosis.

A student whose first position feels stiff, who presses hard and plays sharp, may have a nut cut too high. That is not a technique problem and no amount of practice will fix it.

A student whose tuning jumps and pings has a binding groove.

Recognising that some playing difficulties are setup problems is one of the more useful things a teacher can pass on, because a student who does not know will keep trying harder at something that is not their fault.
