Neck

The long projecting piece attached to the body, along which the fingerboard is mounted. The left hand positions itself along the neck.

What it is

The neck is the length of maple running from the body of the violin to the pegbox, carrying the fingerboard on its upper surface. See the anatomy section for everything related.

It is carved from the same block as the pegbox and scroll, and it is set into the body at a specific angle that determines much about how the instrument plays and sounds.

What it does

Carries the fingerboard, which is glued to its upper surface.

Supports the left hand. The thumb contacts the underside, and the shape of the neck determines how comfortable that contact is.

Sets the string angle. The angle at which the neck projects from the body determines how high the strings sit above the top and how much downward force they exert on the bridge.

Bears the load. The strings pull the neck forward with substantial force, continuously, for the life of the instrument.

Neck shape

The cross-section is roughly a rounded U, thinner near the nut and thickening slightly toward the body.

The exact profile varies between makers, and it matters to the player. A neck that is too thick, too thin, too round or too flat for a particular hand affects comfort and can affect technique.

Players trying instruments notice neck shape quickly, often before anything else. A neck that suits the hand disappears from awareness; one that does not is a constant small irritation.

Neck shape can be reprofiled by a luthier, within limits, though this is not commonly done.

The neck angle

The angle at which the neck is set into the body is one of the most consequential decisions in violin making.

It determines the height of the strings above the top of the instrument, which determines the height of the bridge, which determines the downward pressure the strings exert on the top.

That pressure drives the whole system. Too little and the instrument sounds weak. Too much and it sounds choked and the top is under strain.

Modern setup uses a steeper neck angle than Baroque instruments did, giving a higher bridge and more downward force. This is part of why a modern violin is louder than a Baroque one, and why converting a Baroque instrument to modern setup requires a neck reset.

Neck reset

Over decades, string tension pulls the neck gradually forward and down. The angle flattens. The bridge height drops. The instrument loses power.

Correcting this is a neck reset: the neck is removed from the body, the joint recut, and the neck reglued at the correct angle.

It is major work, done by a skilled luthier, and it is expensive. It is also routine on old instruments, most of which have had it done at least once.

Signs a reset may be needed: the bridge has become very low, the fingerboard sits close to the top, the action feels wrong even after bridge work, or the sound has gradually lost projection over years.

The heel and the button

The heel is the shaped end of the neck where it enters the body.

The button is the small semicircular projection of the back plate that the heel is glued against, providing additional gluing surface and structural support.

A broken button is a serious repair, since the neck joint depends on it. Cracked buttons are grafted or reinforced.

What can go wrong

Neck angle drop. Gradual, universal, eventually requiring a reset.

Neck coming loose. The glue joint fails, sometimes suddenly. Alarming but repairable, and the joint is deliberately made with hide glue so that it fails before the wood does.

Warping. Less common than on guitars, since violin necks are shorter and thicker, but possible.

Cracks, usually at the heel or through the button.

Wear on the underside from decades of thumb contact. Cosmetic, and on old instruments it is honest wear.

Care

Very little is required.

Keep humidity stable, which protects every glue joint on the instrument.

Do not lean the instrument against anything by its neck.

Wipe the underside occasionally, since hand oil accumulates there.

If the neck feels loose or the action changes suddenly, stop playing and see a luthier. A neck coming loose under tension can cause more damage if played on.

Where it comes up in playing

Constantly and invisibly.

The thumb rests against it. Shifting slides along it. The transition where the neck meets the body is the landmark for third position, one of the most important physical references a violinist has.

How it is taught

As part of naming the parts, and then as a landmark.

The neck heel, where it joins the body, is how students find third position. That contact point is taught explicitly and is one of the first physical references a student learns to trust.

Beyond that, neck shape comes up when a student is choosing an instrument, where comfort matters more than most beginners expect.
