The dark wooden strip on top of the neck where the left-hand fingers press the strings. Made of ebony. It has no frets, so pitch is determined entirely by finger placement.

What it is

The fingerboard is the long dark strip glued to the top of the neck, extending over the body of the instrument. The anatomy section covers the rest of this group.

The left hand presses strings against it to shorten their vibrating length and change pitch. Practising this is easier with the free chromatic tuner.

It is made of ebony, and it has no frets.

Why no frets

This is the defining characteristic and it is a choice, not an omission. Fretted string instruments existed long before the violin.

Without frets, the player determines pitch entirely by finger placement. Nothing stops the string at a fixed point, so any pitch within the range is available, including the small gradations between the notes of equal temperament.

The cost is that intonation is entirely the player's responsibility, and learning it takes years.

The benefit is expressive: a violinist can adjust pitch to context, playing a leading tone slightly high to lean toward its resolution, or matching just intonation in a chord where equal temperament would sound rough.

This is why string players speak of expressive intonation, and it is not available on a fretted instrument.

Why it is curved

The fingerboard is curved across its width, matching the curve of the bridge.

If it were flat, the bow could not reach the middle strings without also sounding the outer ones. The curve lets the bow contact one string at a time.

The radius is a compromise. Flatter makes double stops easier and single strings harder. More curved does the reverse.

The curve must match the bridge curve. A mismatch means some strings sit at the wrong height and the instrument plays unevenly across the strings.

The scoop

The fingerboard is not flat along its length either. It has a very slight concave dip, deepest around the middle.

This is deliberate. A vibrating string moves in an arc, widest at its midpoint. A perfectly flat fingerboard would let the string contact the wood and buzz. The scoop provides clearance.

The amount is small, well under a millimetre, and it varies by string, since thicker strings vibrate more widely and need more clearance.

Wear and grooves

Over years of playing, the strings wear grooves into the ebony, particularly in first position where most playing happens.

Grooves cause buzzing and unevenness. The string sits in a channel and can contact the edges.

The repair is planing: a luthier shaves the surface, restoring a smooth face and the correct scoop. This can be done several times over an instrument's life before the fingerboard becomes too thin and needs replacing.

A fingerboard replacement is routine work on an old instrument, and most hundred-year-old violins have had at least one.

What it is made of

Ebony is standard. Extremely hard, dense, and dark. It resists the wear that strings cause better than any common alternative.

Cheaper instruments sometimes use a softer wood stained black to look like ebony. This wears quickly and is one of the clearest indicators of a low-cost instrument. A fingerboard that shows lighter wood where it has been worn is not ebony.

Composite fingerboards exist on some modern instruments and wear well.

Contact point and the fingerboard

The end of the fingerboard is a reference for the bow.

Bowing over the fingerboard produces sul tasto, a soft and flute-like tone, because the string is most flexible there.

The normal bowing position is between the end of the fingerboard and the bridge, and the fingerboard's end is the boundary players use to judge it.

What can go wrong

Grooves, as above.

Buzzing from lost scoop or from a groove.

Lifting where the fingerboard separates from the neck, usually from humidity change or old glue. Repairable.

Warping, which affects action along its length.

Cracks, uncommon in ebony but possible.

A false fingerboard, stained softwood on a cheap instrument, which wears fast and cannot be planed.

Care

Wipe rosin dust off it regularly. It accumulates under the strings.

Keep humidity stable, which protects the glue joint.

If a note buzzes only in one place, or only on one string, suspect the fingerboard before assuming a technique problem.

How it is taught

As part of naming the parts, then as the surface everything happens on.

The absence of frets is worth explaining to beginners explicitly, because it is why intonation takes so long and why practising slowly matters. A student who understands that nothing on the instrument will tell them when they are in tune approaches ear training differently.

Why the absence of frets shapes everything

Worth stating plainly to any beginner: nothing on this instrument tells you when you are in tune.

A guitarist pressing behind the fifth fret gets the same pitch every time. A violinist pressing in roughly the right place gets roughly the right pitch, and the difference between roughly and exactly is the difference between playing and playing well.

This is why violin takes longer than most instruments to sound acceptable, why slow practice matters more, and why ear training is not optional.

It is also why a violinist can do things a guitarist cannot: adjust a leading tone upward to lean into its resolution, match the pure intervals of a chord rather than the compromised ones of equal temperament, or shade a note fractionally for expressive effect.

Students who understand the trade tend to be more patient with the difficulty, because they can hear what it buys.
