The four wooden pins used to tune the strings. Turned to tighten, raising pitch, or loosen, lowering pitch.

What it is

The pegs are the four tapered wooden pins in the pegbox. Each holds one string and adjusts its pitch by winding it tighter or looser. Practising this is easier with the free chromatic tuner. The anatomy section collects the related terms.

They work by friction alone. There is no gear, no ratchet, no locking mechanism. A peg holds because it is wedged into a matching tapered hole and the wood grips.

That simplicity is why they work indefinitely when fitted well and why they are maddening when fitted badly.

How they work

Both the peg and its hole are tapered, and they must match precisely.

Turning the peg while pushing gently inward wedges it tighter and increases the friction that holds it. Pulling out slightly releases it.

This is why the technique is push-and-turn rather than turn alone. A peg turned without inward pressure will slip back as soon as it is released.

The taper is standardised but not universal, and fitting a peg is skilled work. A peg that has been fitted properly turns smoothly and holds without force.

What they are made of

Ebony is the most common, hard and stable.

Rosewood and boxwood are also traditional, with boxwood common on older and Baroque instruments.

Pernambuco appears on some fine instruments.

The wood matters less than the fit. A well-fitted boxwood peg outperforms a badly fitted ebony one.

Modern geared pegs use a mechanism concealed inside a peg-shaped housing and are discussed below.

Why they slip

The most common complaint, and there are several causes.

Poor fit. The peg and hole tapers do not match, so contact is partial. This is the most common cause and requires a luthier.

Humidity change. Dry air shrinks wood. In a dry winter, pegs that held all summer start slipping.

Worn holes. Decades of use enlarge and distort the holes. Bushing corrects it.

Insufficient inward pressure. A technique problem rather than an equipment one. The player turns without pushing.

Contamination. Old peg paste, dirt, or oil from handling reduces grip.

Why they stick

The opposite problem, equally common.

Humidity. Damp air swells wood. In a humid summer, pegs seize.

Too much inward pressure during tuning, wedging the peg hard.

Old compound that has hardened.

A stuck peg should never be forced. That is how pegbox walls crack. Working it gently back and forth, or leaving the instrument in a drier environment for a day, usually frees it.

Peg compound

A waxy stick applied to the contact surfaces of the peg.

Good compounds do two things at once: they lubricate so the peg turns smoothly, and they add grip so it holds. That combination is what makes tuning feel controlled rather than a fight between sticking and slipping.

Applying it: remove the peg, rub the compound on the two shiny contact bands, replace, and turn a few times to distribute.

Chalk, soap and graphite are traditional remedies and all are worse than proper compound. Soap in particular can attract moisture.

Geared pegs

An increasingly common alternative. A planetary gear mechanism is concealed inside a peg-shaped housing, giving a reduction ratio of roughly 4:1.

The advantages are real. Tuning is precise and easy, the peg cannot slip, humidity has no effect, and fine tuners become unnecessary, which slightly reduces mass on the tailpiece.

The drawbacks: they cost more, they add a little weight, installation requires a luthier, and some players and dealers regard them as inappropriate on a fine old instrument.

For students, and for anyone who finds tuning frustrating, they solve a real problem. Their adoption has grown considerably.

Tuning technique

Push gently inward while turning. The inward pressure is what makes it hold.

Turn slowly. Pegs move a lot of pitch for a small rotation and it is easy to overshoot.

Approach the note from below. Tuning up to pitch leaves the string settling upward; tuning down leaves it likely to drop.

If a peg jumps past the note repeatedly, the fit is wrong.

Use fine tuners for small adjustments where they are fitted, particularly on the E string.

What to watch for

A peg that pushes very far in before holding means a worn hole.

A peg that turns with no resistance at all means poor fit or contamination.

A crack near a peg hole means stop and see a luthier.

A string winding pressed hard against the pegbox wall can crack it.

How it is taught

Tuning is taught early, and pegs are the difficult half of it.

Beginners are usually taught fine tuners first, since they are safer, and pegs are introduced once the student can be trusted not to force anything.

The three rules that matter: push while turning, never force a stuck peg, and tell someone when a peg stops holding rather than fighting it.
