Internal corner and end blocks that provide structural strength at the corners and ends of the body.

What it is

Blocks are pieces of wood glued inside the instrument at the points where structural strength is needed. This belongs to the anatomy section.

There are six on a violin: four corner blocks, behind the projecting corners where the C-bouts meet the upper and lower bouts, and two end blocks, at the top where the neck attaches and at the bottom where the endpin button sits.

They are invisible from outside except partially through an f-hole.

What they do

Corner blocks give the ribs something to glue to where they change direction sharply. Rib ends meet at the corners, and without a block behind them there would be nothing holding the joint. They also support the projecting corners of the plates.

The top block takes the neck. The neck heel is glued into a mortise cut partly into this block, and the block bears the entire forward pull of the strings through the neck.

The bottom block takes the endpin button, which anchors the tailgut and therefore the string tension at the lower end.

Between them, the two end blocks carry the whole string load. Everything else is comparatively unstressed.

What they are made of

Spruce is standard, chosen for lightness. The blocks add mass, and mass inside the instrument affects the sound, so makers use no more than necessary.

Willow is also used, particularly for corner blocks.

The blocks are shaped and hollowed to reduce weight while retaining strength.

Built-in and inserted blocks

There are two traditions of construction and the difference is visible internally.

Built-in blocks, in the Italian method, are glued to an internal mould and the ribs bent around them. This produces blocks with a characteristic shape and the ribs let into them.

Inserted blocks, used in some other traditions, are fitted after the rib structure exists.

The difference is one of the things experts look at when identifying where an instrument was made.

The neck joint

The top block is where the most important joint in the instrument lives.

The neck heel is set into a mortise cut through the top rib and into the block, and glued. The back's button provides additional gluing surface at the rear.

This joint carries the full forward pull of four strings continuously. When a neck comes loose, it is this joint failing, and when a neck is reset, this joint is remade.

Because hide glue is used, the joint releases before the wood breaks, which is deliberate. A neck joint that failed by splitting the block would be far worse than one that simply comes unglued.

What can go wrong

Cracked top block, usually from a fall that stressed the neck. Serious, since the neck joint depends on it.

Cracked bottom block, around the endpin hole.

Loose blocks, where the glue has failed. Discovered during other work.

Cracked corner blocks, usually from an impact that also damaged the corner.

Block damage is almost always found while the instrument is open for another reason, since none of it is visible from outside.

Where it comes up in playing

Never directly.

The relevance is that when a luthier discusses a neck reset, a broken button, or a crack at the endpin, they are working on or around the blocks.

Why they are worth knowing about

Blocks and linings together answer the structural question: a violin is made of very thin wood, so how does it survive twenty-five kilograms of string tension for centuries?

The answer is that the load is concentrated at two points, the top and bottom blocks, both of which are solid wood anchored into the rib structure, and everything else is arranged so that it carries as little load as possible.

Understanding that makes the design feel deliberate rather than fragile.

How it is taught

Not taught in lessons.

It comes up when an instrument needs work, and knowing the vocabulary makes a conversation with a luthier much easier to follow.

For a student considering a serious instrument purchase, a basic grasp of internal construction is genuinely useful, since a condition report will refer to blocks, linings, and the neck joint as a matter of course.

Reading a condition report

Blocks and linings appear constantly in condition reports and appraisals, and a student buying a serious instrument will encounter the vocabulary.

"Neck reset" means the joint at the top block was remade.

"Button graft" means the back's button, where the neck heel glues, was repaired or replaced.

"Blocks replaced" indicates significant internal work, which is common on old instruments and not necessarily a concern.

"Original blocks" is a positive note on an antique instrument, indicating less invasive restoration history.

None of these are alarming in themselves. Old instruments have been repaired, often repeatedly, and good repairs do not diminish a good instrument.

What matters is the quality of the work and whether it was done by someone competent. A well-executed neck reset is invisible and permanent. A poor one causes problems for decades.
