Soundpost

A small cylindrical wooden post inside the body, standing between the top and back directly behind the treble foot of the bridge. Transmits vibration between front and back and critically affects tone.

What it is

The soundpost is a small cylinder of spruce standing vertically inside the violin, wedged between the top and the back, just behind the treble foot of the bridge. The anatomy section collects the related terms.

It is roughly six millimetres in diameter and a few centimetres long. It is not glued. It is held entirely by the pressure between the two plates.

In French it is called the ame, meaning soul, and the name is not sentimental. Moving it a millimetre changes how the instrument sounds.

What it does

Structural. It supports the top under the bridge's treble foot, where the downward load is concentrated. Without it the top would sink and eventually crack.

Acoustic. It transmits vibration from the top to the back, coupling the two plates into a single system. The top and back move together rather than independently.

Asymmetry. It sits under the treble side while the bass bar runs under the bass side. This asymmetry is deliberate: it makes the top's response uneven across its width, which is part of how the instrument produces a complex sound rather than a simple one.

Why position matters so much

A millimetre is a significant adjustment.

Moving the post closer to the bridge generally brightens and focuses the sound. Moving it away generally softens and opens it.

Moving it toward or away from the centre changes the balance between strings.

Tightening the fit, so the post is more firmly wedged, generally brightens. A looser fit softens.

Luthiers adjust soundposts as a routine setup tool, and a good adjustment can transform an instrument's sound without changing anything else.

This is why two identical-looking violins can sound different, and why an instrument that sounds wrong is sometimes fixed in ten minutes.

Why never to touch it

A soundpost is set with a specialised tool through the f-hole, and setting it requires knowing what a correct fit feels like.

Too tight and it stresses the plates, potentially cracking them. Too loose and it falls.

A post that is not cut to match the exact curvature of both plates at that point bears on an edge rather than a face, concentrating force and risking a crack.

A soundpost crack, in the top or the back at the post position, is one of the most serious and value-destroying damages a violin can suffer.

There is nothing a player should do to a soundpost except notice when it has moved and take the instrument to someone qualified.

When it falls

If all four strings are loosened at once, or if a bridge falls, the pressure holding the post disappears and it drops inside the instrument.

You will hear it rattling.

Do not attempt to reset it. Do not shake the instrument to reposition it. Do not put anything through the f-hole.

Loosen the strings slightly so no further pressure is on the unsupported top, and take it to a luthier. Resetting a post takes a professional a few minutes.

The prevention is simple: never remove all four strings at once. Change strings one at a time.

What can go wrong

Falling, as above.

Moving. A post can shift slightly from impact or from humidity change, and the sound changes without anything obvious happening. A player who notices their instrument suddenly sounds different should consider this.

Soundpost crack. A crack in the top or back at the post location. Caused by a badly fitted post, by impact, or by a post left in place while the plates moved with humidity.

This is serious. It affects value substantially and repair is skilled and expensive.

Too tight, stressing the plates over time.

Too loose, producing a dull sound and eventually falling.

Seasonal adjustment

Because wood moves with humidity, the fit of a soundpost changes through the year.

In dry winter conditions the plates come closer together and the post fits tighter. In humid summer they relax and it fits looser.

Some players have their soundpost adjusted seasonally. Most do not, and most instruments tolerate the variation.

An instrument that sounds noticeably worse every winter or every summer is a candidate for seasonal adjustment.

Where it comes up in playing

Only in the sound, which is to say constantly.

Players describing an instrument as bright, dark, focused, tight or open are describing something the soundpost strongly influences.

How it is taught

As a warning, mostly.

The lessons: never remove all strings at once, never put anything through an f-hole, and if you hear rattling inside the instrument, stop playing and take it in.

Beyond that, it is worth knowing that soundpost adjustment exists as an option. A student unhappy with their instrument's sound sometimes has a setup problem rather than a bad instrument, and that is worth investigating before buying another.
