Bouts
The upper and lower curves of the violin body. The upper bout is near the neck, the lower bout near the tailpiece. The waist between them lets the bow reach the outer strings.
What it is
The bouts are the curved sections of the violin's outline. The anatomy section collects the related terms.
There are three pairs: the upper bouts near the neck, the lower bouts at the bottom, and the C-bouts, the concave curves at the waist between them.
Together they produce the familiar violin shape.
Why the waist exists
The C-bouts are the most functionally important, and the reason is practical rather than aesthetic.
Without a narrow waist, the bow could not reach the outer strings without striking the body of the instrument. Only the inner strings would be playable.
The C-bouts cut in far enough that the bow clears the body when playing the G and E strings.
This is why every bowed instrument in the violin family has a waist and why plucked instruments like the guitar have a much less pronounced one. The guitar's waist is for holding comfort; the violin's is a bowing requirement.
The corners
Where the C-bouts meet the upper and lower bouts, the outline forms projecting corners.
These are structurally significant. Internally, corner blocks sit behind them, providing gluing surface and strength where the ribs change direction sharply.
The corners are also one of the identifying features of a violin. Their length, angle and the shape of the purfling mitre at their tips vary by maker and school, and experts examine them closely.
Corners are vulnerable. They project and they get knocked, and broken or repaired corners are common on older instruments.
Acoustic role
The proportions of the bouts determine the enclosed air volume and its distribution.
The lower bouts are larger than the upper, giving the body an asymmetric volume that contributes to the instrument's resonant behaviour.
Changes to bout dimensions change the sound, and this is one of the variables makers work with. Instruments built on different patterns, with different bout widths and proportions, sound recognisably different.
The relationship is complex and not reducible to a rule, but the shape is acoustic as well as practical.
Variations between patterns
Different makers and schools used different outlines, and the bouts are where the differences are most visible.
Some patterns have wider lower bouts, giving a broader appearance and more enclosed volume. Others are narrower and more elongated.
The C-bouts vary in how deeply they cut in and how sharply they curve.
These differences are one way an experienced eye identifies where and when an instrument was made.
What can go wrong
Broken corners, the most common bout-related damage. Repairable, and very common on old instruments.
Rib cracks in the C-bouts, which are the most sharply bent and therefore most stressed sections of rib.
Open seams along the bouts where top or back separates from ribs. Common and minor.
Edge wear, where the projecting edges of top and back have worn from handling and use. Normal on old instruments and part of honest wear.
Care
Corners get knocked. Be conscious of them when putting the instrument down, when moving in a crowded space, and when handling a case.
The C-bout area is where the bow passes closest to the body, and a careless bow stroke can strike it. This happens more than players admit, and repeated contact wears the varnish.
Where it comes up in playing
Only as a clearance question.
The bow travels near the C-bouts on the outer strings, and a player with a poorly angled bow arm will occasionally strike the body.
That is a sign the arm is at the wrong height for the string, and it is a useful diagnostic: a bow that hits the instrument is a bow that is not on the right plane.

The useful point is why the waist exists. Students who understand that the shape is determined by the bow's need to reach the outer strings tend to remember it, and it makes the instrument's design feel purposeful rather than arbitrary.
The corners and what they say
The corners where the C-bouts meet the upper and lower bouts are among the most examined features of any violin.
Their length, the angle they project, and the way the purfling mitres at their tips are all individual to a maker.
They are also the most damaged part of most old instruments, because they project and they get knocked. Broken and restored corners are extremely common and, on a genuinely old instrument, expected rather than alarming.
For a student, the useful point is simply awareness. Corners are the part of a violin most likely to be damaged by carelessness, and being conscious of them when handling the instrument prevents a repair that costs more than most students expect.
Rib damage at the waist
The C-bout ribs are bent to the sharpest curve on the instrument, which makes them the most stressed and the most crack-prone.
A crack there is repairable but should not be ignored, since the ribs carry structural load between the plates.
