The part of the bow that the player holds. Made of ebony, horn or carbon fibre. Contains the screw mechanism that tightens the bow hair.

What it is

The frog is the block at the lower end of the bow, where the player's hand grips. It holds one end of the bow hair and houses the mechanism that adjusts hair tension. This belongs to the anatomy section.

It is the heaviest single component of the bow and the point where the player has most direct control over what the bow does.

The name has no agreed origin. Theories connect it to the French word for a similar shape, to a resemblance to the animal, and to a woodworking term for a joint. No explanation is settled and the word is simply what the part is called.

What it does

Three functions.

It anchors the hair. One end of the hair is held in the frog by a wedge in a slot, spread evenly across the width by a small metal ferrule. Our metronome is free and useful here.

It houses the tension mechanism. A screw runs through the frog into an eyelet, and turning it slides the frog along the stick, tightening or loosening the hair.

It provides the grip. The player's hand sits at or just above the frog, and its shape determines how the hand can be positioned.

What it is made of

Ebony is the standard for the body. Dense, hard, dark, and stable across humidity changes.

Older and finer bows sometimes use tortoiseshell or ivory, both now restricted or prohibited by international trade rules. A bow with either may not cross borders without documentation, which matters for travelling players.

Silver or nickel for the fittings: the ferrule, the ring, the slide on the underside. Gold on the finest bows.

Mother of pearl for the eye, the decorative circle on the side, and often for the slide.

Carbon fibre bows use synthetic frogs, usually moulded, and function identically.

Why playing at the frog is hard

The frog end is where the bow is heaviest, because the frog itself carries most of the bow's mass.

That weight bears on the string. In the middle of the bow the player supplies most of the pressure. At the frog, the bow supplies more than the sound usually needs, so the player must actively hold weight off the string.

That is counterintuitive. Students expect to press more as they approach the frog and instead must press less, and the adjustment takes time to become automatic.

The frog end is also where small hand movements have the largest effect, because of the leverage. Precision matters more there than anywhere else on the bow.

This is why colle, the stroke made entirely with the fingers, is practised at the frog. Control there transfers everywhere else.

The bow hold

The hand sits with the thumb bent, its tip contacting the stick just forward of the frog, usually against the corner where the frog meets the stick.

The fingers curve over the stick. The little finger rests on top, curved, and does real work: it balances the bow when the hand is at the frog and helps lift weight off the string.

A collapsed little finger is one of the most common bow hold faults and it shows up first at the frog, because that is where the balancing is needed.

Maintenance

Loosen the hair after playing. Leaving a bow tight stresses the stick and can permanently reduce its camber.

Do not over-tighten. A common guideline is that a pencil should fit between hair and stick at the middle. Over-tightening straightens the camber and ruins the bounce.

Keep rosin off the frog. Rosin dust accumulates and can be wiped away with a soft cloth. Built-up rosin near the ferrule is harder to remove later.

Watch the screw. If it turns without effect, or grinds, the eyelet may be stripped. This is a common repair and not expensive, but ignoring it can damage the stick.

Handle by the stick, not the frog. Repeated pressure on the frog can loosen it from the stick over years.

What can go wrong

Stripped eyelet. The screw spins freely and the hair cannot be tensioned. Straightforward repair.

Loose frog. The frog rocks slightly on the stick. Needs attention before it wears the stick.

Cracked ebony. Usually from a drop. Repairable, sometimes requiring replacement.

Rosin buildup. Cosmetic mostly, but heavy buildup can interfere with the slide.

Broken thumb corner. The point where the thumb rests wears over decades and can chip. Replaceable.

Where it comes up in playing

Every stroke played in the lower third of the bow. Colle. Ricochet, which is usually initiated near the balance point above the frog but depends on frog-end control. Chopping in fiddle styles, which happens at the frog specifically.

Also in any passage requiring a very full sound, since the frog end can produce the most volume when the weight is used deliberately rather than fought.

How it is taught

Bow hold comes first, and it is taught at the frog because that is where the hold is defined.

Then playing at the frog specifically, since students avoid it instinctively and the last three inches of most bows are underused.

Then weight management, which is the real lesson: adding and removing weight as the bow travels, so a whole bow sounds even from end to end.
