Bow Pressure
The weight applied through the bow to the string. More weight produces volume and depth. Excessive pressure produces a scratchy, choked sound.
What it is
Bow pressure is the downward force applied through the bow into the string. It sits in the acoustics section of the dictionary.
Many teachers prefer the word weight, because it describes better where the force should come from: the natural weight of the arm and bow, transmitted through a relaxed hand, rather than muscular pushing.
The distinction matters. Pressure applied by pushing produces tension and a pressed sound. Weight allowed to fall through the arm produces a full sound with a relaxed hand.
What it does
Volume, in combination with speed. More weight transfers more energy.
Tone colour. More weight brings out more upper overtones up to a point, producing a fuller, more complex sound. Beyond that point the string is choked and the sound degrades.
Articulation. The initial application of weight determines how a note begins. A sudden pinch gives a sharp attack; a gradual application gives a soft one.
The limit
Every combination of contact point and bow speed has a maximum usable pressure. Beyond it, the string cannot vibrate freely and the sound breaks into a crunch or a scratch.
That limit is lower closer to the fingerboard, where the string is flexible, and higher near the bridge, where it is stiff.
It is also lower at slow bow speeds. A slow bow with heavy pressure crushes readily; a fast bow tolerates more.
Students who play loudly by pressing find this limit constantly, which is why forcing produces a worse sound rather than a louder one.
Where the weight comes from
The arm, through a relaxed hand, into the stick.
The index finger is the primary point of transmission, resting on the stick and channelling arm weight into it.
The little finger does the opposite job: it lifts weight off, particularly at the frog where the bow is heavy and less pressure is needed than the bow naturally provides.
A collapsed little finger removes that control, and the player has no way to lighten the sound at the frog.
The thumb provides the counterpoint, allowing the hand to control the balance. A rigid thumb blocks the whole mechanism.
The frog and tip problem
The bow's own weight varies along its length, so maintaining constant sound requires continuously varying applied pressure.
At the frog, the bow supplies more weight than most notes need. The arm actively holds some off.
At the tip, the bow supplies almost none. The arm must add it.
A player who applies constant pressure produces a note that starts loud and fades on every down-bow. This is the single most common bow arm fault and it persists for years in students who never learn to hear it.
Pressure and articulation
The way pressure is applied at the start of a note is what defines several strokes.
Martele pinches the string before moving, then releases into a fast stroke. The accent comes from released tension.
Colle uses the fingers to apply and release pressure without arm involvement.
Portato applies small pressure pulses within a continuous bow.
A soft entry applies pressure gradually as the bow starts, so the note emerges rather than beginning.
Understanding pressure as something that can be varied within a stroke, rather than set once, is what makes these strokes possible.
What goes wrong
Too much, generally. The most common fault by far. Students associate effort with volume and press.
The symptoms: a pressed, choked sound, a tense right hand, fatigue, and a limited dynamic range because there is nowhere above the current pressure to go.
Not enough at the tip, producing the fade.
Too much at the frog, producing a crushed start.
Constant pressure, producing the uneven whole bow.
Pressure without speed, which is the mechanism of a crushed sound.
The diagnostic question
When a student's sound is poor, the useful question is whether pressure and speed are matched.
A pressed sound means too much pressure for the speed. The fix is more speed or less pressure, and the second is usually the answer.
A weak sound means too little of both, or a contact point too far from the bridge.
A whistling sound usually means too little pressure for the contact point.
Teaching students to diagnose their own sound this way is more valuable than correcting each instance, because it gives them a framework they can apply alone.
How it is taught
Through the language first. Weight rather than pressure, allowing rather than pushing.
Then through long bows, feeling the difference between frog and tip and learning to compensate.
Then through the interaction with speed, usually by deliberately producing a crushed sound and then a whistling one, so the student knows the boundaries of the usable range.
