Bow Speed
The rate at which the bow moves across the string. Faster bow speed produces more volume. Slower bow speed with more weight produces a full, concentrated tone.
What it is
Bow speed is how fast the bow travels across the string, measured as distance per unit time. It sits in the acoustics section of the dictionary.
It is one of three variables that determine the sound, alongside contact point and pressure, and it is the one most directly tied to volume.
What it does
Volume. More bow speed, all else equal, produces more sound. The bow transfers more energy to the string per unit time.
Tone colour. Faster bow generally sounds brighter and more open. Slower bow, with correspondingly more weight, sounds darker and more concentrated.
Sustain and character. A long slow bow produces a sustained, singing quality. A fast bow produces a more immediate, brilliant one.
How it interacts with pressure
The relationship that governs everything.
For a given contact point, there is a range of workable combinations of speed and pressure. Move outside that range and the sound breaks down.
Fast bow with light pressure produces a bright, thin sound. Too far and it whistles or fails to grip.
Slow bow with heavy pressure produces a dark, concentrated sound. Too far and it crushes.
Fast bow with heavy pressure produces a large, forceful sound. This is how a fortissimo is made.
Slow bow with light pressure produces a quiet, delicate sound. This is how a genuine pianissimo is made.
Students often think of volume as a pressure control alone, which produces a pressed forte and a weak piano. Volume is really a speed and pressure combination, and the best fortissimo is more speed than pressure.
How it interacts with contact point
Closer to the bridge requires slower bow. The string resists more and needs more time to respond.
Further from the bridge requires faster bow. The string is flexible and a slow bow will not sustain it.
This is why sul ponticello is played slowly and sul tasto quickly, which surprises students who expect the reverse.
Bow distribution
The practical application of bow speed, and where most students first meet it as a problem.
A phrase of eight notes played in one bow requires the bow divided across eight notes. Longer notes take more bow; shorter notes take less.
If the division is not planned, the player uses too much bow early and arrives at the tip with nothing left, so the phrase collapses at the end.
Planning this is arithmetic before it is technique. Look at the phrase, count the notes, decide how much bow each gets, check the stroke ends where the next one needs to begin.
Experienced players do this automatically. Students must do it deliberately for a long time first, and marking bow divisions in the part is a legitimate and useful practice.
Speed changes within a stroke
Bow speed need not be constant.
A note can begin with a faster bow and slow, producing a natural decay. Or begin slowly and accelerate, producing a swell.
This is a primary expressive tool. Shaping a long note by varying bow speed through it is how a sustained note is made to sound alive rather than static.
Portato uses pressure pulses within a constant speed. Messa di voce, the swell and diminish on a single note, uses speed and pressure together.
The weight difference along the bow
Complicating everything: the bow is not uniform.
At the frog it is heavy, so less pressure is needed. At the tip it is light, so more must be supplied.
Maintaining constant sound through a whole bow requires continuously varying pressure while holding speed steady, which is one of the fundamental skills and takes years to make automatic.
What goes wrong
Running out of bow. The distribution problem, and the most common.
Unconscious speed variation. Accelerating through the middle of the bow, where it feels easiest, and slowing at both ends. Very common and produces an uneven line.
Using pressure instead of speed for volume. Produces a pressed sound.
Not slowing near the bridge, producing noise.
Not speeding up over the fingerboard, producing nothing.
How it is taught
Through long slow bows on open strings, listening for evenness. This is the foundational exercise and stays in a practice routine indefinitely. Use the free metronome to check yourself on this.
Then distribution, with phrases deliberately marked and counted.
Then speed variation within a stroke, as an expressive tool.
The realisation worth prompting: volume comes mainly from speed, not from pressure. A student who understands this stops pressing to play loudly and starts moving the bow instead, and the sound improves immediately.
Marking bow distribution
A practical habit worth forming early.
When learning a passage with long slurs, mark in the part where the bow should be at key points: half at this note, three quarters here, at the tip by the end.
This converts a vague sense of running out into a plan. Students who do it find their phrasing improves immediately, because the bow no longer dictates the shape by accident.
Experienced players stop needing to write it down. Students should write it down for years first.
The volume misconception
The most common misunderstanding in bow technique.
Students associate loud with pressing. Pressing produces a crushed sound with a hard ceiling, because beyond a certain pressure the string chokes.
Volume comes mainly from bow speed. A fast bow with moderate weight near the bridge produces a genuinely loud, ringing sound. The same weight with a slow bow produces a pressed one.
Telling a student to move the bow faster rather than press harder often transforms their forte in a single lesson.
