The lowest, thickest string. Produces a dark, rich, powerful tone. Wound with silver or tungsten.

What it is

The G string is the lowest and thickest of the violin's four strings, tuned to G below middle C. See the acoustics section for everything related.

It is the fourth string, counting from the highest, and is often referred to that way in fingering discussions.

Its sound

Dark, rich and powerful. The G string has the most fundamental weight of the four and the least brightness.

Played in first position it is warm and grounded. Played high, in fifth position and above, it becomes intense and concentrated in a way no other string matches. This high register on the G string is one of the most distinctive sounds the violin produces and composers use it deliberately.

Construction

Modern G strings are wound: a core with metal winding over it.

The core may be gut, synthetic or steel. Synthetic cores dominate for classical playing, offering stability with a tone closer to gut than steel provides.

The winding is silver on most quality strings. Some use tungsten or a silver-tungsten combination, which is denser and allows a thinner string for the same pitch, changing the response. The chromatic tuner on this site is worth having open while you practise this.

The winding matters. A thicker, heavier string speaks more slowly and needs more bow to start. A denser winding on a thinner core speaks faster.

Playing it

The G string requires more from the bow than the higher strings.

More weight. A thick string needs more energy to set in motion. The same bow pressure that produces a full sound on the A string produces a thin one on the G.

Slower bow. Combined with more weight, a slower bow gives the string time to respond.

A closer contact point. The G string generally tolerates and benefits from a contact point somewhat nearer the bridge than the E string does.

Students who use identical bowing across all four strings find the G weak and the E harsh. Adjusting continuously as the bow crosses strings is a technique in itself and one that separates a developed bow arm from a basic one.

Response time

The G string speaks more slowly than the others. There is a measurable delay between the bow starting and the string sounding fully.

In fast passages this matters. A player who starts each note on the G at the same instant as on the A will find the G notes arriving late.

Experienced players compensate without thinking, starting fractionally earlier on the low string.

Sul G

Composers sometimes mark a passage sul G, meaning it must be played entirely on the G string even where it could be played more easily elsewhere.

The reason is tone. A melody played high on the G has an intensity and darkness that the same notes played in first position on the D or A do not. The player accepts a harder fingering for a specific colour.

This is common in Romantic repertoire and is one of the clearer examples of a composer specifying tone colour rather than just pitch.

Practical issues

Wear. The G string's winding wears where the fingers contact it, particularly in first position. A worn winding produces a dull, false tone.

Whistling. Less common on G than on E, but a poorly matched string can whistle.

False notes. A G string that has gone false produces a pitch that does not stay stable. Usually a sign the string needs replacing.

Response getting sluggish. Old strings speak more slowly. If the G has become noticeably harder to start than it was, replacement is due.

String life

The G typically lasts as long or longer than the others in terms of tone, but the winding wear is what usually ends it.

A player who notices the string looking flattened or discoloured where the fingers sit should replace it, even if it still sounds acceptable.

Where it comes up

Every piece. The G string covers the lowest fifth of the violin's range and any passage descending below D on the D string needs it.

Beyond that, in the sul G writing that Romantic composers used for its particular intensity, and in the low register of orchestral parts.

How it is taught

Beginners meet it early but often use it least, because most beginner repertoire sits on the D and A strings.

The teaching points that matter: it needs more weight and a slower bow, it speaks more slowly so notes must be started slightly earlier, and the high register on the G is one of the most rewarding sounds on the instrument and worth working toward.

Practising on it

Deliberate G string work is underrated because beginner repertoire uses it least.

Scales played entirely on the G, climbing into fifth and seventh position, do two things at once. They develop the high-position left hand, and they force the bow arm to adapt to a string that needs more weight and a slower stroke.

A student who sounds good on the D and A but poor on the G has a bow arm that has only learned one setting. The G exposes that immediately.

Long tones on the open G, listening for evenness, are also more revealing than the same exercise on the A, because the slower response makes any inconsistency in the bow audible.
