Vibrato
A rhythmic oscillation of pitch used to enrich tone and add expression. Generated by three mechanisms: arm vibrato driven by the forearm, wrist vibrato driven by a pivoting wrist, and finger vibrato driven by the finger joints alone. Wider and slower vibrato sounds more relaxed; narrower and faster sounds more intense.
What it is
Vibrato is a regular oscillation of pitch applied to a sustained note. The finger rocks on the string, raising and lowering the pitch slightly and rapidly, which enriches the tone and gives the note warmth and life. Without vibrato a violin note is pure and static. With it the note breathes. The difference is immediately audible to anyone, including listeners with no musical training.
Two things are commonly misunderstood. Vibrato is not decoration added on top of a note, it is part of how the note is produced. And vibrato does not make a note sound louder, though it makes it carry further in a hall, which is not the same thing.
How the pitch actually moves
The pitch does not oscillate evenly above and below the written note. It oscillates from the written pitch downward, and back up to it.
The finger starts on the correct pitch, rolls back toward the scroll lowering the pitch slightly, then returns. The ear perceives the highest point of the oscillation as the pitch of the note.
This matters practically. A student who oscillates evenly above and below plays consistently sharp, because the ear takes the top of the swing as the note. Teaching vibrato without teaching this produces intonation problems that are hard to trace later.
The three mechanisms
Vibrato is generated three ways, and most players use a blend that shifts with the music.
Arm vibrato comes from the forearm swinging toward and away from the body. The wrist and hand move as a unit. It produces a broad, warm, powerful oscillation and suits romantic repertoire and large sound.
Wrist vibrato comes from the hand pivoting at the wrist while the forearm stays still. It produces a lighter, more flexible oscillation and suits chamber music, faster passages and lighter textures.
Finger vibrato comes from flexing the finger joints alone, with minimal wrist or arm movement. It is subtle, narrow and quiet, and is used in very soft or intimate passages.
Each has its own entry with its own mechanics. A complete player has all three available and moves between them without deciding to.
Width and speed
Vibrato has two independent variables and controlling both is what separates expressive vibrato from a habit.
Width is how far the pitch drops. Wide vibrato is dramatic and warm. Narrow vibrato is contained and pure.
Speed is how many oscillations per second. Fast vibrato is intense and urgent. Slow vibrato is relaxed and singing.
The two combine into four broad characters, and skilled players vary them constantly within a phrase. Slow and wide for a long romantic line. Fast and narrow for tension. Slow and narrow at a quiet dynamic.
A player with one vibrato applies the same colour to everything, which is the most common limitation in otherwise capable students.
When to start
There is no universally agreed age or level, but there is broad agreement on the prerequisite: the left hand must be relaxed and the intonation reasonably secure first.
Vibrato applied to a tense hand does not work, because the oscillation needs freedom in the joints. Vibrato applied over insecure intonation hides the problem rather than solving it, and the student stops hearing that they are out of tune.
Most students begin somewhere between the second and fourth year of study. Starting too early produces a tight, fast, uncontrolled shake that has to be dismantled later, and that dismantling is harder than learning it properly the first time.
What goes wrong
Tension. The most common problem and the cause of most others. A gripping left hand cannot oscillate freely, so the vibrato becomes fast and narrow with no control over either variable.
Sharpness. Covered above. Oscillating above the pitch rather than below it.
One speed only. The student develops a single vibrato and applies it identically to every note regardless of context.
Vibrato that stops. Starting a note plain and adding vibrato partway through, usually because the vibrato takes a moment to engage. The note should begin with it.
Uneven oscillation. The rhythm of the swing fluctuates, producing a wobble rather than a vibrato.
Vibrato only on long notes. Shorter notes get none, so the line becomes inconsistent. Even quick notes can carry some.
How it is notated
Almost never. Vibrato is assumed in most repertoire from the nineteenth century onward and its presence or absence is a stylistic decision.
Where composers want it absent they write senza vibrato or non vibrato. Where they want it emphasised they write molto vibrato.
Baroque and early Classical performance practice treats vibrato as an ornament used selectively rather than a default, which is a significant interpretive question rather than a technical one.
How it is taught
We start away from pitch entirely, with the hand sliding smoothly up and down the string to establish the motion without the pressure of playing a note.
Then rhythmic oscillation against a metronome, slowly, so the student develops control over speed rather than a reflex shake.
Then narrow and wide deliberately, so both variables are conscious from the beginning.
Then application to repertoire, and the ongoing work of varying it musically, which continues indefinitely.
