Trill
Rapidly alternating between the written note and the note immediately above it in the scale. The speed and character of the trill varies by style period. Baroque trills typically start on the upper note; modern trills start on the written note.
What it is
A trill is a rapid alternation between the written note and the note immediately above it in the prevailing scale. The finger repeatedly drops and lifts, producing a rippling oscillation between two pitches. Practising this is easier with the free scale visualizer. It is one of the oldest and most common ornaments in Western music and appears in every period from the Renaissance onward.
The symbol is tr above the note, often followed by a wavy line indicating duration.
The interval
The trill alternates by a step, not a half step specifically. Whether that step is a whole tone or a semitone depends on the key.
A trill on C in C major alternates C and D, a whole tone. A trill on E in C major alternates E and F, a semitone. The player reads the key signature and uses the diatonic upper neighbour.
Composers sometimes want a chromatic alteration and write an accidental above the trill symbol to indicate it.
Where it starts, by period
This is the single most important interpretive question about trills and the answer changes by era.
Baroque. Trills generally start on the upper note, on the beat. A trill written on C typically begins with D. This is not a decoration before the beat; the upper note is part of the harmony and lands on the beat.
Classical. Usually the upper note still, though practice varies and some composers indicate otherwise. Mozart-era trills are generally upper-note starts.
Romantic onward. The main note start becomes standard. A trill written on C begins with C.
Editions vary in how much guidance they give, and performers disagree. Playing a Baroque trill from the main note is a recognisable stylistic error, so the period matters more than personal preference.
How it ends
Many trills end with a termination: a turn-like figure that resolves into the following note.
In Baroque and Classical practice this is often expected even when not written. A trill on C resolving to B would typically end with B and C before the resolution.
Some composers write the termination out. Others assume it. Editions frequently add it in small notes.
How it is produced
The trilling finger drops and lifts repeatedly while the lower finger stays down.
Speed comes from finger independence rather than force. A relaxed finger falling from a small height moves faster than a tense one being driven.
The lifting is as important as the dropping. Students concentrate on the drop and let the lift be passive, which produces an uneven trill because the finger does not clear the string properly.
The hand stays still. Trills produced by shaking the whole hand are slow and uneven.
What goes wrong
Tension. A gripping hand cannot trill fast. This is the primary limit for most students.
Uneven rhythm. The alternations are not equally spaced, producing a stutter. Practising the trill as a measured rhythm, four notes per beat then six then eight, builds evenness before speed.
The fourth finger. Trills involving the fourth finger are significantly harder and many students have a good trill between fingers one and two and an unusable one between three and four.
Insufficient lift. The finger does not clear the string, so the upper note is muffled or absent and the trill sounds like a wobble.
Starting on the wrong note. The period question above.
Slowing under pressure. A trill that works in practice slows in performance, usually because tension increases.
Building speed
The reliable method is measured practice. Play the trill as four even notes per beat with a metronome, then six, then eight, then twelve, increasing only when the current speed is genuinely even.
Practising fast immediately produces an uneven trill that never improves, because the unevenness is being reinforced rather than corrected.
Trill exercises using all finger pairs, including three to four, are standard in etude collections and remain useful at every level.
Where you meet it
Everywhere. Baroque repertoire is full of them. Classical and Romantic writing uses them constantly. They appear in orchestral parts, chamber music and solo repertoire alike.
Students meet trills early, often before they have the finger independence to execute them well, which is why a slow measured approach matters.
Trills with the fourth finger
The trill between the third and fourth fingers is the hardest in the standard repertoire, and it appears often enough that avoiding it is not an option.
The fourth finger is shorter and weaker, and the third and fourth fingers share tendons in a way that limits independent movement. Some students never develop a fast three-four trill.
Targeted practice helps. The standard approach is measured trills on that pair specifically, several minutes daily, over months. It is slow and unglamorous and it does work.
An alternative used by some players is fingering the passage to avoid the pair where the music allows, which is a legitimate solution and not a compromise.
Trill exercises
Every major etude collection contains trill studies and they remain valuable at every level.
The most useful format is measured: the trill notated as an exact subdivision so evenness can be checked, rather than as tr with a wavy line where unevenness hides.
Practising trills with each finger pair, ascending and descending, on every string, is a standard routine and one of the more directly productive uses of technical practice time.
