Soul Music Lessons offers ensemble sessions for teens ages 13-17 across North Metro Atlanta, alongside private lessons in each student's primary instrument.
How Ensemble Works for Teens
Sessions bring together 3 to 8 students with instruments from across the studio, including piano and keyboard, electric and acoustic guitar, bass guitar, saxophone, trumpet, and drums. Each student arrives having worked on their individual part in private lessons. The ensemble session puts the parts together, working toward playing full songs from beginning to end as a group.
Songs are a mix of popular covers that students choose and pieces that work well for the current ensemble configuration. Students have input on the repertoire. The goal is always music that the students genuinely want to play, not just music that is pedagogically convenient.
What Playing With Other Teenagers Teaches
Teenagers who play in ensemble sessions develop skills that private lessons and school orchestra participation do not fully develop. In a school orchestra, a conductor keeps everyone together and a section of thirty violinists provides safety in numbers. In an ensemble of four to eight students, there is no section to hide in and no conductor to follow. Every student has to listen, respond, and contribute independently.
