The Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra is the most competitive regional program, connected directly to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, with auditions drawing from across the metro area.
The Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra, based in Marietta, is one of the largest youth orchestra programs in the Southeast, with five orchestras at different levels serving students from 17 metro counties.
The Gwinnett County Youth Symphony serves Gwinnett County students in grades six through twelve.
The Alpharetta Symphony Youth Orchestras, founded in 2018, offer three ensemble levels for students ages 12-18 with auditions held each summer.

Starting early does not mean starting perfectly. It means building physical habits before the competing pressures of middle and high school make daily practice harder to maintain. A student who starts at age six and practices twenty minutes daily has accumulated over 700 hours of practice by the time they enter high school. That foundation is not easily replicated by students who start later.
Daily practice does not mean long practice sessions. A student who practices fifteen deliberate minutes every day develops faster than a student who practices an hour once a week. We teach students how to practice, not just what to practice. Every student leaves each lesson with a specific written plan for the week, with measures to isolate, tempos to use, and things to listen for.
Sight-Reading: The Skill Most Students Neglect
Most students practice their current pieces and their scales. Very few students practice sight-reading deliberately. This is why sight-reading is where most students lose points in auditions.
Sight-reading is a trainable skill. Students who practice reading new music regularly, even five minutes at the end of each practice session, develop the ability to take in a new piece much faster than students who sight-read only when forced to. We build sight-reading into lesson plans for students who are preparing for auditions, and we teach students how to practice it effectively at home between lessons.
